The CREATE Model: Culturally Responsive Teaching for Holistic and Transformative English Learning in Higher Education

Teaching English is never a neutral act. Instead, it carries with it the potential to shape perspectives, values, and identities. In this book, we seek to explore how Christian educators can approach English language teaching in ways that are both academically sound and faithfully
rooted in biblical truth. Chapter One discusses the challenges of teaching English to students from
diverse cultural backgrounds in the Indonesian higher education context. Chapter Two presents the foundations of Culturally Responsive Teaching. Chapter Three introduces the design of the CREATE Model (Culture, Respect, Equity, Awareness, Transformation, Expectation) for teaching
English in multicultural university classrooms. Chapter Four outlines the step-by-step implementation of the CREATE model. Finally, Chapter Five provides examples of holistic
and transformative assessment aligned with the model.
